I enjoy discussing current topics like Tiger Woods. He just finished up playing in the Presidents Cup held in Australia. He played well all week and actually clinched the cup for the Americans. While he is still not back to his form he was three years ago, this is a big step forward for the struggling Tiger.
Tiger has not been the same player, or viewed as the same person since the scandal that happened two years ago. He hasn't won a tournement since. Tiger has been through a lot and everyone is expecting him to still be the same golfer he was then. I don't think someone can go through everything he did and even be the same person after, let alone the same golfer. Golf is such a mental sport and it takes a while to get your head straight after something so life changing.
I'm rooting for Tiger to come back. It may take longer than everyone expects, but eventually I believe he will dominate again. I saw him golf over the summer at the Firestone Inviational in Akron. He did not play well, but he still had the biggest following. It's always interesting to see an athelete with as much auroa as Tiger Woods.
Derek,
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is unlikely that someone can have the life-changing disruptions that Tiger caused/experienced and still be the same person. The issues had to affect him mentally and physically as evidenced by his stuggle to rise back to the top on the professional golfing circuit. It is interesting that some fans will forgive him and others may never support Tiger again. While Tiger's mistakes were extreme, haven't all of us made errors of judgement and action in our lives?
Stephen
I'm glad you liked talking about Tiger in class. I did not realize that he determined the outcome of the President's Cup. I knew that he did not do as well the first several days, but then I thought the international team was catching up. I would like to see Tiger regain the form he had early in his career. I definitely agree with Stephen that everyone makes errors in judgment. It just gets magnified when you are a celebrity like Tiger, on a global stage!
ReplyDeleteI also am rooting for Tiger's return to dominance. However, I don't think it will ever be at the magnitude it once was. As mentioned in your post, and also previous comments- he has changed as a person, his lifestyle, and his golf status. No one person, professional athlete, celebrity, or whomever, can recover from such a life altering situation he faced with the reveal of his many affairs, followed by loss of endorsements (work challenges), and his family falling apart. We're human, and when the ground is shaking beneath us, we fall- get back up, but with a scared stance and a few bruises. It will take time for Tiger to gain dominance back in the game, but I believe he can if he focuses on one round at a time.
